Gibbs Wire & Steel Service Center

South Bend, Indiana

Panzica was engaged by this premier international supplier of spring wire and metal strip to locate a greenfield site, provide buyer-broker development assistance, and design and build their flagship North American distribution center.

Constructed of precast-prestressed concrete and steel, the building features a 280-foot long wall of translucent fiberglass panels allowing ample daylight into the warehouse and assembly areas. A similar detail was used above all emergency exits to facilitate wayfinding. These are among many other sustainable features of the facility that included the extensive use of recycled materials and regionally-produced building components.

The floor slab was installed by laser-guided equipment, resulting in a high quality, near “super flat” floor that earned recognition from the Indiana Ready-Mixed Concrete Association. Site planning provided for the segregation of trucks from other vehicular traffic. The main building entry features a signature element of a curved metal wall and canopy representing steel coil being sliced and unfurled into metal strip.
